There was an audience of about 60 people who were from a range of age groups and backgrounds. The audience were led into studio 2 at the Unity Theatre where they were entertained with music by Oscar and Francisco Carrasco. After introductions there was a lecture by Dr. Fabio Bortoli about the Ancient Venetians Culture with more music and dramatic performance.

The audience were then led from the studio and around the theatre bars and hallways to view the exhibition, with the musicians playing, the artist singing /performing and other members of the cast dancing to the music. This was quite comical, as the audience were not expecting to be serenaded on their journey around the exhibition.

The audience were then called upon to dance and then invited to help themselves to the prepared buffet of Venetian / Italian delights and also to enjoy the exhibition at their leisure. Everyone enjoyed themselves, this was a unique cultural event bringing music, dance, art, cuisine and education together and in which the audience were encouraged to participate.

The visual art exhibition was continued for 3 months and received much positive feedback.

"THE HUMANITY CARPET"2001

the Humanity Carpet the Humanity Carpet
Venetian artists Giorgio and Piero Bortoli from the "Cultural association Veneziaeoltre" and "Studio Liverpool Venice" with the collaboration of various artists. A 'Happening' installation was presented on the 9 June 2001at the official inauguration for the 49^ Biennale of Venice Visual Art "Plateau of Humankind" inside a principal avenue of the Biennale Gardens "Giardini di Castello" Venezia.

The installation measures 10x6 metres. It is made of 80 sewn together sacks of jute, which were used for the transportation of coffee, which came from many different country producers including South America, Africa and Asia. The carpet symbolises Humanity walking over forgotten cultures. The red sign in Venetian and English languages represent the forgotten and the emerging culture, and the blood versed on the third world countries.

The public were encouraged to walk over the carpet to interact and participate. The vision and message for the piece is quite sombre if we think about capitalism that has led to globalisation and the absorption of many Cultures. However the public who enjoyed the artistic performance took it constructively and meaningfully.

Press Release: We would like to give our warmest welcome to everyone and would like to bring to the attention of the Direction of the Biennale di Venezia, the distinct lack of Venetian artists in the Biennale events. The Pavilion Venezia was built in 1932 to host the 'Venetian Decorative Arts' and the best artists of the time and was inaugurated at the 18^ edition of the Biennale, However it was transformed into a press office and a toilette for the 46^ edition in 1995. Today we see the reopening for ….one 'Institutional' presence.

Some of the comments about the project:

ERY CAMARA : President of the International Jury of the Biennale of Venice 2001 said: 'This year the exhibitions were excellent but we have to pay more attention to forgotten cultures'

MASSIMO CODA : General co-ordinator of the Biennale of Venice said:' A lovely surprising and civil performance '

The Honourable MP. VITTORIO SGARBI ; The under secretary of Beni Culturali and international art critic said:' The venetian artists are becoming rare and should be protected by the WWF'.

"Publicised on Italian national television news, local and national news papers, and on the web".
